monocropping is the worst. especially crops that aren’t used to feed humans i.e. soybeans and corn

hey thanks capitalism!
thanks for the perverse incentive to grow cash-crops and not food to feed starving people.
and thanks for making it cheaper to feed livestock corn instead of grass.

Soy is responsible for the majority of deforestation in Brazil and Paraguay. This is yet another big ol’ bandaid that gives the illusion that you’re reducing carbon emissions by giving up meat. False.

Oh and this: “Sadly, even organic soy products may not be as green as we think. Now, it’s pretty much confirmed that Silk Soy is using beans from Brazil and China, despite the organic label. The Organic Consumers Organization is encouraging people to boycott Silk Soy because of the way workers in these countries are treated and because even with monitoring, these soy farms still threaten the environment.”

While this article isn’t scholarly, she backs up her statements with recent scientific evidence and recent medical findings. There’s a series of pdfs on google about Brazil’s soy problem.

I really hate environmental bandaids. Cases like this just make eating local and seasonal look that much better…even better than “Organic” labels (a whole other problematic issue)

my life is a series of short rants.
